Bothies and wild camping in Scotland
Scotland is the one part of the UK where wild camping is a right under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and where most of Britain's bothies stand. Each place states who looks after it and what the rules are. Nothing here can be booked.

The lie of the land
Before you go
Wild camping in Scotland is lawful on most unenclosed land under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: small groups, two or three nights at most in one place, away from buildings and roads, leave no trace. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park runs seasonal camping management zones between March and September where you need a permit or a campsite.
Bothies are open shelters looked after by volunteers, most of them by the Mountain Bothies Association. They are free, cannot be booked, and have no water, toilet or power. Follow the Bothy Code: small groups, carry out your rubbish, leave fuel if you can. Several close during the stag stalking season; the MBA site lists them.
